How I test every kit.
Every kit here gets weeks of real playing before it earns a score. Kits that hit my test bench also get the same battery of measurements, run the same way every time, and the bench list keeps growing. When two kits land on the same number, that number means the same thing, and you can trust the comparison.
Why I measure
A score should mean something.
Most e-kit reviews come down to one person’s impression after an afternoon of playing. That is fine for a feel, but it falls apart the moment you try to compare two kits. One reviewer’s “great dynamics” is another’s “a bit much,” and there is nothing underneath the words.
So I measure. The same tests on every kit, captured the same way, turned into numbers you can line up side by side. The measurements also catch things you cannot hear in a showroom: how many real velocity layers a kit actually has, whether it quietly recycles the same cymbal across forty “different” kits, how much lag sits between your stick and the sound.
Then I tell you what the numbers mean for the way you play. A measurement on its own is trivia. Tied to a real buying decision, it is the difference between a kit you love and a kit you box back up.
The process
What every kit goes through.
Every kit goes through the same four stages, in the same order, every time.
Weeks of playing
Before I measure anything, I live with the kit for a few weeks. Real practice, real recording, the way you would use it at home. This is where the things no meter catches show up: how the pads feel under a fast hand, whether the hi-hat tracks your foot, what gets annoying by week three.
The same setup
Then every kit goes through the identical measurement rig. Same interface, same mic placement, same MIDI setup, same room. Nothing gets a home-field advantage, so a number from one kit honestly compares to the same number from another.
What I measure
Around nine measurements per kit, all things you can hear or feel: pad latency, how many real velocity layers it has, dynamic range, whether the sounds repeat or genuinely change, how loud it is in the next room. The full list is below.
Score, then context
The measurements drive the scores. Then I write up what each result means for the way you actually play, because a number on its own does not tell you whether you will enjoy the kit day to day.
The lab
Where the numbers come from.
Every measurement runs through one setup in my studio. The kit’s audio goes into an SSL audio interface, the same one for every test, so the recordings stay clean and directly comparable. Every kit is recorded at the same input gain on that interface, so the levels line up and no kit gets a loudness advantage. From there a set of analysis tools I wrote myself pulls out the numbers: velocity layers, latency, dynamic range, sample reuse, and the rest.
Some tests need more than a cable. Pad latency is measured with a microphone pressed against the pad, so the stick hit and the sound land on one recording and I can read the delay down to the millisecond. Room noise is captured with a meter in the next room and the room below. This is the part I geek out on, and it is where every score on the site starts.
What counts as a measurement? Every capture the bench takes gets logged: each velocity step, each round-robin hit, each note in the MIDI sweep, each latency reading. Across the seven kits benched so far, that adds up to more than 25,000 recorded values. The numbers you see on a review are summaries of those logs, and the raw captures stay archived so I can re-check any figure I publish.

Is it actually a good sound source?
Velocity layers
I play each pad from the softest ghost note to the hardest accent and count how many distinct samples the kit actually uses.
More real layers means soft and hard hits sound genuinely different, instead of one sample turned up and down.
Sample variation
I trigger the same note over and over and compare the recordings to see if the kit varies the sample or replays one identical hit.
Repeated identical samples create the robotic machine-gun effect you hear on fast snare passages and rolls.
Sample reuse across kits
I capture the same voice across every factory kit and check how many are genuinely different sounds.
It shows whether a forty-kit module is real variety or the same samples renamed.
Feel
How does it play under your hands?
Pad latency
A mic against the pad captures your stick and the kit’s sound on one recording, so I can read the delay down to the millisecond.
Latency is the lag between hitting a pad and hearing it. It is the biggest thing that makes a kit feel real or sluggish.
Dynamic range
I measure the loudness gap between the softest and the hardest hit the kit will produce.
A wide range lets your playing breathe. A narrow one flattens everything toward the same volume.
Hands-on playing
I play buzz rolls, flams, and fast dynamic passages by hand and listen for what stutters, drops, or misfires.
A single measured note can look perfect while real playing falls apart.
Living with it
What is it like to own day to day?
Polyphony
I stack hits until the kit runs out of voices and older notes start cutting off.
Low polyphony clips your cymbal swells and busy patterns. High polyphony lets them ring out.
Timing stability
I record the kit’s metronome and triggering over time and measure how steady the timing holds.
A click or engine that drifts makes practice and recording frustrating.
Room noise
I strike the kit at full force and measure the volume in the next room and the room below with a meter.
It tells you whether you can play at night without bothering the house or the neighbors.
I also check sound fidelity, how the samples decay, and the full connectivity picture: MIDI, USB audio, Bluetooth, and whether you can switch kits from a DAW. These rarely swing a buying decision on their own, so they live in the review body and get flagged only when a kit gets one badly wrong.

Scoring
How a score is built.
Every kit is scored from 1.0 to 5.0 across six areas. The overall score is built from those six, so one strong number cannot carry a weak kit.
Because every kit is judged on the same six areas, the scores line up across the whole site. A 4.2 on one review means the same thing as a 4.2 on another.

What the colors mean
Independence
No one can buy a score.
DrumSpy runs on affiliate links, the small commission a retailer pays when you buy through one of mine. That is the whole business model, and it never changes which kit wins or what score it earns.
Manufacturers are welcome to send gear, and many do. It goes through the same tests and the same scoring as everything I buy myself. The verdict stays mine.
If a manufacturer believes a measurement is wrong, I will retest. Send me the specific claim and I will rerun the same scripts on the same unit, then publish the second run alongside the first, whatever it shows. Reviews never come down, and manufacturers never see one before it goes live.
